Whether you’re preparing a lot for new construction, clearing overgrown vegetation from a residential property, or getting a commercial site ready for development — land clearing in Albuquerque and central New Mexico presents challenges that most out-of-state or inexperienced contractors aren’t prepared for. Desert terrain, native vegetation with deep root systems, caliche, arroyos, and rocky substrate all require equipment and experience specific to this region.
M&M Concrete and our subsidiary ABQ Backhoe & Bobcat Services have been clearing land throughout Albuquerque and central New Mexico for over 45 years. We own our own backhoes and Bobcats, we operate them with our own experienced crew, and we handle residential and commercial land clearing jobs of every size. One call gets you the equipment, the operators, and the experience. Call us at (505) 550-0418 for a free estimate.
Land Clearing in New Mexico — What Makes It Different
Land clearing in Albuquerque is not the same as clearing a flat grassy lot in Texas or a wooded lot in Colorado. New Mexico’s high desert terrain creates specific challenges that have to be understood before a single piece of equipment rolls onto the site:
- Deep rooted native vegetation. New Mexico’s native plants — juniper, chamisa, Apache plume, desert willow, four-wing saltbush — have root systems that go surprisingly deep relative to their above-ground size. A juniper that looks like a three-foot shrub can have roots six to eight feet deep and spreading ten feet in every direction. Surface clearing without proper grubbing leaves a root system that continues to decay underground — creating voids that cause settling and cracking in any concrete poured above them.
- Caliche. That hard mineral layer under much of Albuquerque stops inadequate equipment cold. Hand tools don’t touch it. Light equipment struggles with it. Our backhoes break through caliche efficiently — and we know from 45 years of Albuquerque soil experience where it runs shallow and where it runs deep throughout the region.
- Rocky substrate. In the Foothills, East Mountains, North Albuquerque Acres, and Sandia Park, clearing often means dealing with granite outcrops and rocky sub-surface. The wrong equipment tears itself apart on this terrain. Our backhoes are sized for Albuquerque’s varied substrate — from sandy West Mesa soil to granite Foothills terrain.
- Arroyos and drainage features. Albuquerque’s terrain is shaped by arroyos — natural drainage channels that carry monsoon runoff. Clearing near or across arroyos requires understanding drainage patterns and Bernalillo County and City of Albuquerque regulations regarding arroyo disturbance. We know the rules and we work within them.
- Monsoon season timing. Clearing a site and leaving it exposed during Albuquerque’s monsoon season without erosion control is a recipe for disaster. We advise our clients on timing and can implement basic erosion control measures after clearing to protect the site until construction begins.
- Cottonwood and Elm root systems. In established Albuquerque neighborhoods — especially the North Valley, Corrales, and established Heights neighborhoods — mature Cottonwoods and Elms have massive, invasive root systems that extend well beyond the tree canopy. We’ve dealt with these root systems on hundreds of Albuquerque jobs. We know how to remove them completely without damaging adjacent structures or utilities.

Brush and Vegetation Removal
New Mexico’s native brush is tough. Chamisa, juniper, and desert shrubs that look manageable from a distance can take hours to clear by hand — and hand clearing doesn’t address the root systems that cause future problems. We use Bobcats equipped with the right attachments to clear brush efficiently across large areas while managing the root systems that hand clearing leaves behind.
Brush removal in Albuquerque requires more than just cutting at ground level. Here’s our approach:
- Surface clearing. We clear all above-ground vegetation — brush, shrubs, native plants, weeds, and low growth — across the entire project area. Material is either mulched in place where appropriate or hauled off the site.
- Stump and crown removal. Every shrub and small tree gets taken to ground level and the crown is removed — not just cut back. Leaving crowns in place allows re-sprouting.
- Root assessment. After surface clearing, we assess root depth and extent for any vegetation that had significant root systems. Roots left in the ground under a future concrete slab or building pad will decay, creating voids and causing settling. We don’t leave root systems that will cause future problems.
- Debris management. Cleared vegetation is either chipped and spread as mulch, pushed to a designated burn pile area, or hauled off site. We discuss debris management with every client before we start — what works for one site doesn’t work for all.
Tree and Stump Removal
Tree removal in Albuquerque’s residential and commercial properties is one of the most requested services we provide — especially in established neighborhoods where mature Cottonwoods, Elms, Mulberries, and Junipers have grown well beyond manageable size or are interfering with planned construction.
Tree Removal
We remove trees of all sizes using our backhoe and Bobcat equipment. For trees in open areas without structures nearby, we can push them over with the backhoe — pulling the root ball with the tree for complete removal in one operation. For trees near structures, fences, or utilities, we work carefully with our equipment to control the fall direction and protect adjacent property.
We are not arborists — we are heavy equipment operators with 45 years of Albuquerque experience. For very large trees that require precision felling near structures, we recommend working with a licensed arborist for the tree felling itself while we handle stump removal and site clearing after the tree is down.
Stump Grinding and Removal
Stumps left in the ground are a long-term problem for any concrete work or construction planned above them. As the stump decays, it creates a void — and soil settles into that void, taking any concrete above it with it. We remove stumps completely — grinding them below grade and removing the debris — so there’s no future settling risk above the stump location.
For construction sites where concrete will be poured, we go deeper than standard stump grinding. A stump ground to six inches below grade is still going to decay and create a void within a few years. We remove stumps to a depth that ensures no settling risk for whatever is going on top.
Root Ball Extraction
When trees are removed in areas where concrete will be poured — driveways, foundations, patios, parking lots — we extract the root ball rather than just grinding the stump. A root ball left underground has the same settling risk as the stump. Our backhoe is the right tool for this — it can pull root balls that no grinder or hand tool can touch.
Grubbing and Root Removal
Grubbing is the process of removing all subsurface organic material — roots, stumps, buried vegetation — from a site after surface clearing is complete. It’s the step that separates a properly prepared site from one that’s going to cause problems for years after construction.
In Albuquerque, grubbing is especially critical because:
- Native plant root systems are extensive. A juniper or chamisa that’s been growing for twenty years has a root system that extends far beyond its visible footprint. Surface clearing removes the plant — grubbing removes the root system that’s going to decay underground.
- Cottonwood roots are invasive. In the North Valley and Corrales, Cottonwood root systems extend 50 to 100 feet from the tree trunk in every direction. Clearing a lot that has Cottonwoods nearby means dealing with root intrusion throughout the site — not just near the trees themselves.
- Decaying organic material creates voids. Any organic material left underground — roots, stumps, buried vegetation — will eventually decay. As it decays, it creates voids. Soil settles into those voids. Concrete poured above them follows. This is one of the most common causes of concrete failure in Albuquerque neighborhoods with mature landscaping.
- Building codes require it. Any permitted construction project in Albuquerque requires the sub-grade to be free of organic material before concrete is poured. A foundation inspection will flag organic material in the sub-grade. We clear it before the inspector ever arrives.
Our grubbing process uses our backhoe to systematically work across the site, pulling root systems from the ground and removing them from the site. It’s labor and equipment intensive — but it’s the step that makes everything built above it last.

Residential Land Clearing in Albuquerque
For homeowners in Albuquerque and surrounding communities, land clearing comes up in several common situations:
- Preparing a lot for new construction. Building a new home, garage, workshop, or metal building requires clearing the site before excavation and foundation work can begin. We clear the lot, grub the root systems, and hand the site off ready for foundation work — which we can also handle as part of a full service package.
- Clearing for a new driveway or patio. Adding a concrete driveway or patio to a property that has overgrown vegetation or tree roots in the planned area requires proper clearing and grubbing before the concrete goes in. Roots under a new driveway or patio will cause it to heave and crack. We clear them first.
- Lot clean-up and property maintenance. Overgrown lots in Albuquerque — especially in the East Mountains, Edgewood, Corrales, and rural areas — accumulate years of native brush growth that becomes a fire hazard and reduces property value. We clear overgrown residential lots efficiently with our Bobcat equipment.
- Pre-sale property clearing. Clearing an overgrown property before listing it for sale can significantly improve curb appeal and perceived value. We’ve done pre-sale clearing throughout the Albuquerque metro for homeowners preparing to list.
- Fire mitigation clearing. In Albuquerque’s East Mountains and wildland-urban interface areas — Edgewood, Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park — brush clearing for fire mitigation is a regular request. Clearing defensible space around structures is something our Bobcat equipment handles efficiently.
Commercial Site Clearing in Albuquerque
Commercial land clearing projects in Albuquerque range from small infill lots in established neighborhoods to large raw land development sites on Albuquerque’s growing west side and in Rio Rancho. Here’s what we handle on the commercial side:
- Development site preparation. Raw land being developed for commercial use needs complete clearing, grubbing, and often rough grading before site work can begin. We coordinate clearing and grubbing with the broader site development timeline — clearing ahead of the excavation and foundation crews so there’s no bottleneck.
- Infill lot clearing. Vacant lots in established Albuquerque neighborhoods that have accumulated years of native brush, debris, and sometimes dumped material need proper clearing before any development can proceed. We clear, haul debris, and leave the site clean and ready.
- Parking lot and paved area preparation. Commercial properties adding parking or paved surfaces need the existing vegetation cleared and root systems removed before any base course or concrete goes in. Root systems under commercial pavement create the same settling and cracking problems as under residential concrete — on a larger and more expensive scale.
- Demolition debris and junk removal. We handle clearing of construction debris, junk, and accumulated material from commercial sites as part of our site clearing service. Old equipment, construction waste, and site debris gets hauled off efficiently with our equipment.
What Comes After Land Clearing
Land clearing is almost always the first step in a larger project. Because M&M Concrete and ABQ Backhoe & Bobcat Services handle everything from clearing through concrete installation, we can take your project from raw land to finished concrete without involving multiple contractors. Here’s how that pipeline works:
- Land clearing and grubbing → removes all vegetation and root systems from the site
- Excavation and rough grading → establishes final grades for drainage and building pads
- Sub-grade preparation and compaction → prepares the base for concrete
- Concrete foundation, driveway, or slab → poured on a properly prepared site
Every phase is handled by the same crew, with the same equipment, under the same management. No handoff between separate contractors. No scheduling gaps. No finger-pointing when something between phases doesn’t go right.

Frequently Asked Questions — Land Clearing Albuquerque
How much does land clearing cost in Albuquerque?
A small residential lot under 10,000 square feet typically runs $800 to $2,500 depending on vegetation density and terrain. A medium lot (10,000 to 30,000 sq ft) runs $2,500 to $6,000. Larger acreage clearing starts at $4,000 and goes up depending on scope. Hourly backhoe and Bobcat rates run $135 to $175 per hour with operator included. We provide a written estimate after assessing your specific site.
Do you clear land for new construction in Albuquerque?
Yes — pre-construction land clearing is one of our most common services. We clear vegetation, grub root systems, and prepare the site for excavation and foundation work. Because we also handle concrete foundations and driveways, we can take your project from raw land through finished concrete as a single coordinated scope of work. One company, one crew, start to finish.
Why is grubbing important before pouring concrete in Albuquerque?
Any organic material left underground — roots, stumps, buried vegetation — will eventually decay and create voids. Soil settles into those voids and concrete above them follows — cracking and settling within a few years. In Albuquerque’s established neighborhoods with mature Cottonwoods and Junipers, grubbing is especially critical before any concrete pour. Building codes also require organic-free sub-grade for permitted construction. We grub completely — not partially.
Can you remove large Cottonwood trees in Albuquerque?
Yes. We remove Cottonwood trees and their root systems throughout Albuquerque — especially in the North Valley and Corrales where they’re most common. For very large Cottonwoods near structures, we recommend coordinating with a licensed arborist for the tree felling while we handle stump and root ball removal with our backhoe. Cottonwood root systems extend far beyond the tree — we remove them to a depth and extent that prevents future root intrusion into adjacent concrete or construction.
Do you do fire mitigation clearing in the East Mountains?
Yes. Fire mitigation clearing — creating defensible space around structures — is a regular service we provide in Edgewood, Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, and throughout Albuquerque’s East Mountains wildland-urban interface. We clear brush, remove juniper, and create the cleared perimeters that fire mitigation guidelines recommend. Call us at (505) 550-0418 to discuss your specific property.
How long does land clearing take in Albuquerque?
A standard residential lot under 10,000 square feet can typically be cleared in one to two days with our equipment. Larger lots and commercial sites take longer depending on vegetation density and terrain. We give you a realistic timeline during the estimate visit based on your specific site conditions.
Do you haul away the cleared debris?
Yes. Debris haul-off is part of our land clearing service. Cleared vegetation, stumps, roots, and any junk or debris on the site gets hauled away at $500 to $850 per load depending on material type. We discuss debris management options with every client — some material can be chipped and spread on site, other material needs to be hauled off. We handle whichever approach works for your project.
